If you are looking for a place full of beautiful beaches, recreational areas and historic sites, Malta is a must see for anyone looking to travel. Just its history alone should be enough to convince you to visit this uniquely beautiful archipelago located between North Africa and Italy in the Mediterranean sea. Malta has an astonishing 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, Valletta and 7 Megalithic structures. The country is roughly 122 sq mi in size and has a population of about 450,000 residents. The Capital of this Island is Valletta, which is known for being the smallest national capital in the European Union with a size of about 0.8 Km2. Because of its location, Malta has received a lot of attention from neighboring countries because of its strategic location as a naval base. As a result of its favorable positioning in the Mediterranean sea, Malta has been controlled by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Moors, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French and British. In 1964, Malta finally gained its independence through the Malta Independence Act which was passed by the British Parliament. As a relatively new independent nation, Malta has been steadily gaining popularity as one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
